A Swing Vault, also known as a Cradle Vault, is a vault used in parkour where the practioner grabs onto two separate parallel rails and swings over one side of it similar to a lazy or thief vault.
Guide[]
Prerequisite[]
Although not required, learning the lazy vault or thief vault first will help with this technique.
Technique[]
- Approach two parallel rails (or similarly slim objects)
- Place one hand on each side of the rail
- Put all of your weight onto your arms so you are holding your body in a position similar to a bodyweight dip
- Using the momentum from the approach, swing both legs forward and kick over one side of the rail in the same manner as a lazy vault
- Push off from both rails to dismount
Usage[]
This vaults usage is fairly limited since it can only be performed on an obstacle with parallel sides. Generally this is two hand rails, but it could even be one hand rail and planting the second hand against a wall.
In most cases, it may be preferable to simply opt for a lazy vault instead but there are sometimes cases where the added momentum from the swing can be beneficial. It can also be used to stabilize your body if you are approaching from the side and need to efficiently redirect your momentum over the obstacle.
It can also be useful in a combination with other vaults. For example, when approaching two parallel rails from the side it is possible to side vault over one rail while keeping the planted hand on the rail and then transitioning into a swing vault to get over the second rail in one smooth motion.[1]
